The stranger arrived at Iping in early February; straightway he went to Coach and Horses and enquired from Mrs. Hall if he could rent a room with fire and put down  a couple of sovereigns as advance.  

Later on he confided to Mrs. Hall that he was an experimental investigator and had come to Iping for continuing his experiments and for that he needed seclusion and wished to be disturbed very less.
