In reality, tom did not want to whitewash the fence.But when his friend came along and laughed at his actions,he made use of his prescence of mind and pretended whitewashing was fun.Reverse psycology came into action,and his friend begged tom to let him try whitewashing, so tom obliged and gained freedom from the chore, as after his friend, more of his companions began to ask permission to whitewash the fence. He also gained things like a toy soldier,orange peels and the handle of a knife, since the volunteers had to pay before tom let them whitewash the fence.
