Vidyasagar championed the upliftment of the status of women in India, particularly in his native Bengal. Unlike some other reformers who sought to set up alternative societies or systems, he sought to transform society from within.At the time of implementation of this Widow Remarriage Act 1856; the Governor-General of India was Lord Canning. 2. The Hindu Widows' RemarriageAct, 1856 legalised the remarriage of Hindu widows. This custom was mainly practiced in rich hindu families.
