Explanation:

I have been locked down in my apartment since Wednesday, March 11. I live alone, with my laptop, a few cactuses and a stuffed cat. I am on the fourth floor of a used-to-be-lively neighbourhood in Turin, Northern Italy.

On the first Sunday, I woke up at sunrise and sneaked out for a quick run. I hate running. But the urge of moving and watching the city still half asleep was so big I didn’t really think about it. I guess I just wanted to fool myself into believing everything was normal. Well, it isn’t. But going out is not the answer. It is crystal clear now that we have to stay at home. It doesn’t matter if I am healthy and young: I have to do my part and not put others at risk, not compromise the weakened healthcare system.

The lockdown has allowed, even forced, us to turn the searchlight inwards. Based on conversations I have had, anecdotes I have heard, social media posts I have read, and emotions I have experienced, there appear to be three crises confronting society.

The first is the crisis of purpose. One of my political friends wrote on his Facebook wall: “I was scared of the emptiness initially. But soon I realised the power of doing nothing. And in the process, questions cropped up in my mind: Was my remaining busy genuinely productive ? Were the meetings I attended, events I ‘graced’, and the series of formal interactions truly designed to be result-oriented? Were the ‘hectic schedules’ fundamentally purposeful at all ?”

The time that we have all got to ourselves in this period has actually made us redefine the nature of our life’s goals and ambitions. It has made us realise that there is a greater common good, which is beyond temporary individual achievements. This period forces us to introspect on the broader purpose we have in life

lot of things that were canceled in 2020 are back on this year. Tentatively. And a lot of commonplace activities that we've previously taken for granted may slowly return to our lives, things like hugging and not being uneasy about getting on a plane. TENTATIVELY.

If everything goes right, we can dare to look forward to these notable spots in 2021.

1. The Tokyo Olympics

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were put on pause because of the pandemic, but are now scheduled for July 2021. It may not look like Olympics past -- the IOC says it will be a "simpler, more restrained approach," -- but that won't stop us from indulging in the communal joy of pretending to know how gymnastics is scored.

2. Eurovision Song Contest

Remember concerts? Remember music shows? Remember seeing big, undulating throngs of overly energetic people enjoying the vibes without a care in the world? Those may be coming back, and that includes the uber-popular Eurovision Song Contest, which was postponed from 2020. The contest's organizers say there will "definitely be a Eurovision Song Contest in 2021." It's currently penciled in for May in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

3. NASA's Perseverance rover lands on Mars

Mars will get a new little inhabitant when NASA's Perseverance rover touches down in February. Like its charming rover predecessors in the Mars Exploration Program, Perseverance will no doubt have an entire Earth-bound fandom rooting it on. Is it because we like to anthropomorphize complex robotics, or because we secretly wish we, too, could be blasted off this Earth onto another planet?
