Poem ‘The Patriot’ by Robert Browning depicts the condition of a man who sacrificed his everything for his countrymen, but yet was punished by them. A year ago he was loved by them; but after a year he was chained and taken to the scaffolds to be hanged. People were throwing stones at him.
The speaker learnt that people of this world can never judge or pay us for our deeds; it is God who ultimately rewards us or punishes us. The speaker hopes to be rewarded by God.

Earlier the people thronged the decorated streets to welcome the brave Patriot. The air sparkled with joy and the “house-roofs seemed to heave and sway.” However at the turn of a year, things changed and the Patriot got labeled as a traitor. People no longer cheered him and neither did “the old walls rocked with the crowd and cries.” No one stood on the house tops to bid him welcome or even empathize with him.
