The formation of galaxies is still partly enigmatic.
We know that at the beginning the future galaxies are formed of a gigantic cloud of gas, essentially hydrogen and helium whose atomic nuclei were created during the first 3 minutes of the Universe.
How galaxies are formed ?
These clouds collapse one day under the effect of their gravity and fragment to form small balls of gas which will become the stars.
Depending on the initial mass of the gaseous cloud, some galaxy embryos will quickly transform all their mass into a star. Others will take longer. They will convert only nine-tenths of their gaseous mass, and the remaining gas will settle and form a disc.
Finally some galaxies have not transformed more than four fifths of their mass and will therefore take an irregular shape.
What shapes can galaxies take?
Galaxies can be classified into three categories. We thus distinguish spiral galaxies, elliptical or irregular. In these three categories we can find different types such as simple or crossed spirals.
