Childhood:
MS Mary Kom did not have the childhood that people usually dream of! She came from an exceptionally humble background. She was born in the village of Kangathei. It is situated in the rural areas of Manipur.
Both of her parents were farmers who used to work in the jhum fields. Growing up she also helped her parents in the field of farming, and help with the household chores as well. After all, she was the eldest sister of 3 children.
She had completed her sixth standard education from Loktak Christian Model High School. Soon after that, she moved to Saint Xavier’s Catholic School. Yeah, she studied till Standard 8 and manages to take a very obsessive liking for sports. Mary Kom used to play various types of Sports like that of javelin as well as 400 meters running.
She also moved to a new school after Standard 8 but could not pass for class 10 examination from there. She decided to concentrate on sports and move to NIOS for the examination which she did very well in.
Dingko Singh became an inspiration to her dreams of boxing when he returned successfully with a gold medal from Bangkok Asian games. She took up boxing at the age of 15 and manages to get through with some of the best training from K Kosana Meitei. Starting at an old age did not affect the training because she picked up every step quite easily and manage to be honoured forever since then.
