Both a good essay and a good letter have some things in common. They both need to engage the reader’s interest right away. Both need to be written is clear, cogent English, and both need to be proof-read.
An essay needs a formal structure. It must have a thesis that will be proved. It will consist of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. There needs to be strong transitions between each paragraph. As a rule, the language used in an essay is more formal than that used in a letter.
While an essay is generally an intellectual exercise, a letter speaks from the heart, and thus can be more informal than an essay. As a rule, a letter is not designed to prove something. Rather it is designed to engage and update the reader.
Write an essay from your intellect; write a letter from your heart.
