Stephen Spender has focussed on the overall personality of a person to be called truly great. He is highly inspired by Plato's views on greatness which cannot be compared with a person's achievements. Plato believed that some people bring greatness along with them when they come out of mother's womb and it is their soul which makes them great.

Answer:
The quality of "The Truly Great" that the narrator discusses in the first stanza is inspiration. These great individuals remember "the soul's spirit"—that is, they are in touch with the passion of creation that comes from the soul. The truly great come from a type of eternal place where the sun is always shining.
