While both onion and human cells have a cell membrane, only the onion has a cellwall. Both plant and animal cells, including human epithelial, and onion epidermal cells have a structure called a cell membrane or plasma membrane. ... This is the surface of both types of cells.

Onion cells are plant cells and cheek epithelial cells are animal. So the question really ought to be what are the major differences between plant and animal cells. Here goes: plant cells have a cell wall outside the cell membrane made of cellulose (a plant polysaccharide). Animal cells never have a cell wall. Plant cells have chloroplasts for photosynthesis. Animal cells don’t. Plant cells have a central vacuole for storage of water and nutrients. Animal cells don’t. Plant cells have junctions between each other known as plasmodesmata. Junctions between animal cells are of three types, all of which are very different from the plant junctions. Other than that, plant and animal cells contain largely the same organelles (nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi, mitochondria, lysosomes, etc).
