James Madison Jr. (1751 – 1836) and John James Marshall (1755 – 1835), were contemporaries. They were both, American politicians.  

James Madison served as the fourth President of the United States of America from 1809 to 1817 and he was one the Founding Fathers of America.  

John Marshall served as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States of America from 1801 to 1835. He is the longest serving Chief Justice in American Supreme Court history.
