Chennai, on the Bay of Bengal in eastern India, is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. The city is home to Fort St. George, built in 1644 and now a museum showcasing the city’s roots as a British military garrison and East India Company trading outpost, when it was called Madras. Religious sites include Kapaleeshwarar Temple, adorned with carved and painted gods, and St. Mary’s, a 17th-century Anglican church.

Answer:

Well, I think well of Chennai. The city is a cosmopolitan city, with all the attributes a cosmopolitan city is supposed to have. About a few years ago, its boundaries were as prescribed by the British, in other words, it consisted of a relatively small area. with major population concentrations in Mylapore, Triplicane, Mambalam, Egmore, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Royapuram, Sowcarpet, etc. Most of the people were middle class or even lower middle class, and industries were of the MSME sector concentrated in industrial estates in Guindy in the city and Ambattur in the outskirts. All this has changed, and Chennai is on the verge of becoming a mega city — i.t. industries, automobile majors, more educational institutions of all levels, and excellent connectivity, with both suburban rail and bus dominating. The city’s boundaries are now extended to areas considered distant then, but now within one;s reach. Language spoken is mostly Tamil, with some pockets of Telugu/Hindi/Sindhi spoken by migrants who came to the city nearly a century ago. The negatives are: its climate, which is correctly described as hot, hotter and hottest. Once one gets accustomed to it, as one does , say, in Jaipur, Nagpur, Delhi, etc. where the summer temperature is more heated up than Chennai, one will find the city alluring, if I may say so.; though Ola and Uber are very active with passengers preferring them, I have no good word to describe our three-wheeler autorickshaws. The drivers would love to get hold of all that is in your pocket.

Chennai is well connected to all major cities in India and some abroad. People are hard working, religious and helpful. The Marina beach, touted as the second longest in the world, and Eliots beach are well known and well patronised.

Presently the city is parched. The numerous lakes and ponds that are the sources of drinking water are dry because of failure of North-west monsoons for two years in sequence. The situation will change for the better this year.

Real estate has boomed in Chennai. In addition to old traditional areas, flats. apartments, houses have multiplied in thousands in areas considered out of reach only two decades ago.

To sum up, I consider Chennai to be a city well maintained and conducive to good living. Comparisons with other mega cities are odious, and I will not indulge in that. All the best.
