They do not slither like, say, a snake. But they do not walk in the way creatures with legs do.
They lay down mucus at the front, and move by waves of contraction/expansion of the foot moving forward on the mucus. If you let a snail crawl (and this is the word usually used for their movement) on a glass plate, you can see these waves moving forward.
On very dry or chemically unpleasant surfaces, they may “lope”, only laying down mucus in blobs, and actually lifting sections of the foot off the ground to minimise contact.
