Answer:

Your cat may be playing a game oif he looks at you right after he jumps inot it. I had a cat years ago that when we both sat in the lawn chairs in the back yrad, If I got up, he’d quickjly move from =his chair to mine, and give me a silly look as if he’d been there the whole time. He knew I was coming back to sit, and was actually trying to be funny, like, “Oh? Were you siutting here? Imagine that!”

An aquantance was visiting. Astonished, he asked if I’d seen what the cat did. I told him that the cat had a sense of humor and it was a game he played with me, pretending he’d been in that particular chair the whole time. The cat gave his most innocent look and he body posture indicated playfulness. His daughter had a cat, but he was not familiar with someone being in such good communication with one as to play such games.

Many cats know that where a human has sat is comfortably warm, and he may have been taking advantage of that. Additonally, cats in colonies time share spaces, so when you get up, that means the space is now available. If you walk away from food, that means you no longer want it, and it is also available. It’s like animals in the wild, or domestic chickens. The dominant animal eats first and when it walks away, the subordinates are allowed to eat. It works with spaces as well.
