In the poem Fire and Ice the poet has presented two opposite views about the end of the world. Fire and ice in the poem are metaphors for desire and hate respectively.  The poet discusses the two possibilities regarding the end of the world. One possibilities is the world ending in flames of fire. The poet feels so when he ponders over the burning flames of desires of people. These desires for more money, more power, etc. will surely hurl the world into another nuclear war, which will burn up the entire world in flames.  

The second possibility of the doom of the world is with ice. The poet feels people have so much of hatred in their hearts against one another that it is sufficient to freeze the entire planet to death.  

So, the fire of evil desires and ice of wicked hatred are the two contradictory opinions presented in the poem Fire and Ice by Robert Frost.

• He considers two possibilities that would be the reason for the world ending. One possibility is the world ending in blazes of fire. It is so, because when he think about the burning flames of unending  and uncontrolled wants  and desires of people. The poet says that human evil desires are akin to the fire in its nature. These will definitely hurl the world into another nuclear war, and therefor it will burn up the whole world in flames.
• The second possibility for the world ending is because of  the ice. Here the poet relates the nature of ice to people's feelings of hate. Because ice with long touch will render your body cold, likewise hate will give your mind and thoughts a lot of numbness. And then it may render us mean and insensitive. Such brutality towards humans is more responsible for the devastation of the earth.
• The poet has an intense feeling that since human beings have so much animosity toward each other in their minds that it would be enough to freeze the whole world to death. The two opposing viewpoints to destroy  the Earth are the the fire owing to evil desires and ice of wicked hatred.
