" + " sign in valency means that the element had lost that much no. of electrons to become stable .

" - " sign in valency means that the element had gain that much no. of electrons to become stable....

Hey mate ,

Plus and Minus sign means that what the element can do . Take or give .

Suppose if there is a metal so it will have a positive sign as they give the number of electrons and become electropositive

For example , Na (11) = 2,8,1 ... So it's valency = +1 as it will give one electron .

But for the cases of non metals the sign is generally negative as they gain number of electrons . For example , Chlorine (17) - 2,8,7 . It's valency is -1 . Thus it will gain one electron
