Modern farming methods require the farmers to set up tube wells for irrigation, and make use of HYV seeds, chemical fertilizers and pesticides in farming, farm machinery like tractors and threshers, which make ploughing and harvesting faster. At present some of the modern methods of farming include:

organic farming
precision farming
nutrient film technique
Modern farming method is also known as green revolution because it made possible for the framers to use high yielding variety of seeds in order to grow wheat and rice. It produced increased number of grains in a single plant and thus, it was possible to produce large amount of grains as compared to the traditional farming methods. The farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh initiated this method first in India. This led to the greater amounts of surplus grains to sell in the markets.

Scientific reports show that the modern farming methods

1. Have overused the natural resource base like the use of

ground water with the help of tubewells.

2. Modern farming requires more inputs than traditional

farming. It requires chemical fertilizers, pesticides, pump sets, farm

machinery, electricity, diesel, HIV seeds and water supply. Most of the inputs

for modern farming are manufactured in factories. All this leads to more cost

of production.

3. Use of modern methods has caused soil infertility and

more and more chemical fertilizers have to be used.
