During the period of Chera dynasty in southern part of india (1st to 3rd century A.D.), lake and well irrigations were developed in large scale. Large structures were built across Vaigai and Kavery (Couvery) rivers. Irrigation tanks were developed and many of these by developing large natural depressions.
