MY DEAR FRIEND HERE YOUR ANSWER :

Abolition of Slavery

French colonies in the Caribbean produced and exported commodities such as coffee, sugar, indigo and tobacco. However, the Europeans did not want to work on distant lands.

To fill this shortage the triangular slave trade sprung up. French merchants bought slaves from the African coasts and sold these slaves to plantation owners of the Caribbean. The slave labour was exploited to meet the growing demands of coffee, sugar, indigo and tobacco.

Thus, the triangular trade was :-

French buy slaves from Africa.

Sell the slaves to plantation owners in the French Colonies.

French colonies used those slaves to produce commodities to be sold in the French and European markets.

The triangular trade made many businessmen prosperous. Port cities such as Nantes and Bordeaux became prominent.

Debates and Abolition

The National Assembly had long debates about whether the rights go man and citizen applied to the subjects in the colonies.
The Convention in 1794 declared that all subjects, even slaves, were equal and ordered to free all slaves.

Return to slavery

Napoleon Bonaparte on rising to power reintroduced slavery.
Plantation owners were given the right to own African negro slaves.

Slavery was finally abolished in France in 1848.
