Umi” in Arabic أمي means my mother from أم mother

“Ummiyy” in Arabic أميّ with stress on last two letter مّ يّ means a person who can't read or write.

It is derived from the word mother as an adjective, and used as a metaphor, to describe a person who is on the same condition as he was given birth to by his mother; ie. being unable to read or write. The word “Ummiah” is used all over the Arab world, denoting part of nation who are unlettered or illiterates.

It was used in Quran six times indicating the meaning and concept. Following are some of the verses with translation:

“And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.” (this verse is about illiterate Israelites who don't know how to read their scriptures.)
“Say [Muhammad]: O mankind indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him that you may be guided.” (this verse states that Prophet Mohammad (saw) was unletterrd.)
“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.” (this verse refers to Prophet Mohammad being mentioned in older scriptures and reffered to as unlettered.)
“It is He (Allah) who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom - although they were before in clear error” (this verse states that God has sent Prophet Mohammad (saw) from an ulettered nation; the Arabs, specially the Meccans, Quraysh tribe, whom prophet Mohammad belonged to.)
Indeed this is perfectly true, Arabs did not have a single text written book before Islam. Wirtten Arabic archeological artifacts, are extremely scarce, probably a handful, literally speaking. Even when Qur'an was revealed parts of it was written on pieces of wood, animal bones and skin. Paper and writting tools were almost unknown and unused by Arabs. Instead, being nomades and constantly on the move, they reverd extensively to use of nemory and vocal transmition. For this they were extremely eloquent in poetry, which they used as their “radios” over the Arabian peninsula, transmitting news, views, local events, places, names, love stories, likesm dislikes, disputes, wars, etc… via an easy to memorize rhythmic patterns called poetry, all in all they had fifteen pattern.

The oldest Arabic text book is Qur'an, it used the same vocal Arabic language of Quraysh, it set the standard for all Arabic literature and derived sciences after it. The oldest surviving text book after Quran is biography of Prophet Mohammad, compiled by Ibn Ishaq some 100 years later.

Having said so, there is an unfortunate minority, being unaware of above, believe that stating Prophet Mohammad as “Ummiyy” and his people as “Ummion” is related to being from Mecca, since it was named in Qur'an as “Um Al Qurah” ie. Mother of all villages, which is an obvious fallacy, as explained above.
