When white light / sunlight is passed through a prism it scatters into its 7 substituent colours . This is known as scattering of light .

The seven substituent colours are VIBGYOR :-

  1. Violet
  2. Indigo
  3. Blue
  4. Green
  5. Yellow
  6. Orange
  7. Red

This happens due to the difference in wave lengths of the 7 substituent colours .

Due to difference in wavelength of different colours , they refract differently .

Red refracts the Least and Violet refracts the Most .

It was discovered by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman in 1928.

The most significant way of scattering of light we have seen in daily life is Rainbow.

Rainbow is formed by scattering of sunlight by the rain drops.
