A standard unit of measurement is a quantifiable language that helps everyone understand the association of the object with the measurement. It is expressed in inches, feet, and pounds, in the United States, and centimeters, meters, and kilograms in the metric system.
Standard units of measurements are important to engineering because if everyone was using different measurement.systems, dimensions of different objects and inventions wouldn't be converted correctly from the inventor to other inventors or manufacturers.

You need standard units of measurement, to be able to communicate dimensions. I am the same height as King Henry VIII, so the length of the top joint of my thumb is one inch, the span from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my little finger is 9inches, the span of my arms is 6 feet, and my foot is 1 foot long. If I want to order a length of timber two thumb lengths square and an arm span, two feet and a hand span long, it is not much use to me if the person cutting the timber is only 5 foot tall. At least if they are 78 inches tall I can plane down the edges and cut the end off.
Standard measurements have to be consistent and accepted by the population working with them.
