Temperance movement was mainly a middle- class movement that emerged in Britain and America from the 19th century onwards. This movement was launched to bring social reform by reducing the consumption of alcohol. It identified alcohol to be the main cause of ruin and destruction of families and society and aimed to reduce its consumption especially among the working classes.
