Any population has built in variation in characters which adapt it better to the environment. The characteristics which enable some populations to survive better in natural conditions (climate, food, physical factors) would outbreed others (survival of fittest).

Hope this is helpful

Answer:

Variations are always present in populations. How did these variations arise?

we know sexual reproduction leads to variations . Variations arose from gene recombinations and gradually these got accumulated in organism's genes. Its only with the course of time, due to changing environment ,food availability and other physical factors etc, nature decides whether that variation is useful or not.
