what is dimension of a physical quantity?

= All the physical quantity of the interest can be derived from the base quantities.

When a quantity is express in the terms of the base quantity, it is written as a product of different powers

of the base quantities.

The exponent of the base quantity that enters into the expression is called the dimension of the quantity in that base.

To make it clear consider a physical quantity force:

force = mass × acceleration

acceleration = velocity ÷ time

velocity = length ÷ time

so ultimately;

force = mass \times lenght \times  {time}^{ - 2}

Homogeneity of Dimensions in an equation.

an equation contains several terms which are separated from each other by symbols of equality plus or minus.

The dimensions of all the terms in an equation must be identical. This is another way of saying that one one can add or subtract some similar physical quantities. Thus, a velocity cannot be added to a force or an electric current cannot be subtracted from our thermodynamics temperature.

This simple concept and principle is called the principle of homogeneity of Dimensions.

Hope it helps you.

Thank you.

Answer:

what i understand about dimensions of physical quantity is that there are supporting air molecules in homogenous medium where wave propagation is possible

Explanation: this concept is based on how material medium of the same properties ,like the way matter behaves when engaged with translocation of sound wave propagation for instance, which means that the medium is isotropic meaning that medium properties (i.e:atmospheric_gas_molecules) interacts with certain frequencies of light, sound waves ,etc. respectively.  but there some delays about sound wave translocation through material medium.
