The Indian society was socially organized on caste. In most regions, people were divided.  Brahmins and kshatriyas considered themselves as ‘upper castes’. Others such as traders and  money lenders were placed after them. Then came peasants and artisans such as weavers and  potters. At the lowest rank were those who labored to keep cities and villages clean or worked  at  jobs that upper caste consider polluting.
