The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another. refractive index: A number (optical property) that describes how light propagates through a medium. ... transmission: When light passes through a material and is not absorbed by that material.

hope this helps

Refractive Index : It represents  the amount or extent  of bending of light when it passes  from one medium to another.

There are two types of Refractive index -

\bullet\red{\bold{Relative \ Refractive \ index}}

\bullet\red{\bold{Absolute \ Refractive \ index}}

Refractive Index of medium with  respect to other medium is called Relative Refractive Index .

(i) Refractive index  of  medium 1  with respect  to  medium  2   =

(Speed  of  Light  in  medium  2 (V2) )\(Speed   of  Light   in  medium 1 (V1) )

Refractive  index  of medium with  resort to air or vacuum is called  Absolute  Refractive Index .

(ii) Absolute Refractive index  of  medium  =

( Speed  of  light  in  air (c) ) \ ( Speed of  light  in medium (Vm) )
