What do vibrato and tremolo mean?

Technically speaking, “vibrato” means slight fluctuations of pitch and “tremolo” means  fluctuations of amplitude/volume or quickly starting the same note again and again. Common usage of the words is muddied, though, and in any case the two effects go hand in hand.
