Electrolysis of water:-
- The breakdown of water molecules into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas under the effect of electric current is called electrolysis or splitting of water.
- On the cathode, hydronium ions are reduced to form hydrogen gas.
- On the anode, hydroxyl ions get oxidized to give rise to oxygen gas.
- 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂
