Explanation:

The electrolysis of water produces hydrogen and oxygen gases. The electrolytic cell consists of a pair of platinum electrodes immersed in water to which a small amount of an electrolyte such as H2SO4 has been added.

Electrolysis of water:-

  • The breakdown of water molecules into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas under the effect of electric current is called electrolysis or splitting of water.
  • On the cathode, hydronium ions are reduced to form hydrogen gas.
  • On the anode, hydroxyl ions get oxidized to give rise to oxygen gas.
  • 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂
