An exoskeleton is the external skeleton that supports and protects an animal's body, in contrast to the internal skeleton(endoskeleton) of, for example, a human. In usage, some of the larger kinds of exoskeletons are known as "shells".

The more proper term is 'exoskeleton'. These are organisms whose body structure is supported by a hard covering surrounding the softer inner tissues (for example, many insects have a hard chitin shell) rather than support from bones contained within the body.
