So basically Cleistogamous flowers are closed flowers where the androecium and gynoecium is not exposed to other flowers. So the pollen from the anther only reaches the stigma of the same flower assuredly. Hence pollinators are not required.

So the statement means that since pollen- pistil interaction is between the same flower an assured seed set is produced without the help of pollinators.

The reason for the absence of Cleistogamous flowers is as follows:

Explanation:

  • The Cleistogamous flowers are those flowers which remain closed.
  • These flowers do not open the inflorescence thus these are self-pollinating. These flowers remain in the dormant bud stage.
  • The reproductive structures in the flowers are small and less pollen is produced.
  • These flowers are homogamous in nature and these do not show any kind of showy arrangement in the floral inflorescence to attract the pollinators.
  • The examples of these flowers includes the Viola, peas, pansy and peanuts.
