We substitute the value of one variable to find the value of other.

1) In the substitution method, we first represent a variable in terms of other. then put that value in the other equation.

2) And after we get the final value of one variable then we just put the value of the variable in any of the equation and get the value of the other.

Given : substitution method

To find : What to substitute

Solution:

we take the value of one variable dependent on other variable from one equation  & substitute in other Equation

Lets take one example

ax + by   = c     Eq1

dx + ey  = f       Eq2

are the two equations where x & y are variables

a , b ,c , d, e & f are constants

in substitution method

we will take the value of one variable dependent on other variable  & substitute in other Equation

Case 1  :

from Eq 1      x   = (c - by)/a

and substitute value of x in eq 2

=> d  (c - by)/a  + ey  =  f

now  we have equation in only variable y

solve it to get y

then substitute value of y  in  x   = (c - by)/a  to get value of x

Case 2  :

from Eq 1      y   = (c - ax)/b

and substitute value of y in eq 2

=> dx  + e(c - ax)/b  =  f

now  we have equation in only variable x

solve it to get x

then substitute value of x  in  y   = (c - ax)/b to get value of y

Similarly we could do

taking y = (f - dx)/e     or  x  = (f - ey)/d from Eq 2  and substitute in Eq 1

So its up to you which variable to substitute from which equation
