If a magnet is left free for a long time, it losses its magnetism due to earth's magnetic fields. The earth's magnetic field exerts a torque on individual magnetic dipoles which alters their orientation.
So, magnetic keepers are used to store magnets.
Bar magnets are arranged in pairs, with opposite poles facing each other. Two soft iron strips are placed at the either end of the pair of magnets. These soft iron bars are called magnetic keepers. This system forms a giant magnetic chain and hence protects from demagnetisation.
