Asymmetric polarization is a fallacy that arises from a mix of overconfidence in the superiority of one's own theories, lack of tolerance, provincialism and inability to see the world from alternative points of view. It's a trick of perspective similar in some ways to  Saul Steinberg's famous illustration of the way New Yorkers view the country. Everything you know seems familiar and good, and that which you don't understand and have no knowledge of seems vast and inexplicable and scary.
