what do you find funny in the poem Adventure of Isabel
Answers
Answer:
In this poem Isabel faces four scary things: a bear, a witch, a giant, and a doctor. This poem shows both interesting and a little bit silly things. There are many funny things like When facing the bear, “She washed her hands and straightened her hair up / Then Isabel quietly ate the bear up.” When the witch threatens to turn her into a toad, Isabel again stays calm: “She showed no rage and she showed no rancor, / But she turned the witch into milk and drank her.” Isabel does not waste her energy on being upset or fearful.
When the giant threatens to turn her bones into meal for his bread, Isabel doesn’t even get upset enough to let it interrupt her snacking on a zwieback (a kind of hard biscuit). What does she do? She finishes the biscuit in a leisurely way and then cuts off the giant’s head. The poking and prodding doctor (the “pill concocter”) who wants to worry Isabel with his warnings of “colds and chills” and make her take pills she does not want literally gets a dose of his own medicine from Isabel, who “calmly cured the doctor.” In all four situations, Isabel does not allow emotions to get in the way—and she prevails every time.
