Paddy Cultivation : Rice crop
Steps of farming or cultivating rice:
- Preparation of soil: Before the rainy season the soil is kept ready to sow the seeds. The weeds are cleared and the ploughing of the field is done with the help of buffaloes or tractor few inches in the soil. The addition of fertilizers and manures is done in the soil and the water is splashed over the surface of soil about 2.5cm.
- Plantation of rice crop: Generally paddy seeds are first grown in nursery and then directly planted it in field. But in India seeds are directly sown. Transplanting yield is higher than direct sowing.
- Field maintenance: Occasionally the weeding and thinning out the more crowded patches. Depending on the growth of crop the water level has to be taken care of.
- Harvesting of crop: It requires human-labour and in dry seasons like summer the rice crops are gathered.
- Threshing, Winnowing and Milling: The rice grains are separated from panicles and the next separation of quality grains from chaff by making the grains fall from height. The milling includes husk removal, polishing rice grains and converting it into edible rice.
