Mauryan art encompasses the arts produced during the period of the Mauryan Empire, which was the first empire to rule over most of the Indian subcontinent. It represented an important transition in Indian art from use of wood to stone.

EXPLANATION:

The Mauryan empire is known as the first great empire. It was the first empire to rule over the Indian subcontinent and was also extended to areas as far as Afghanistan. Some of the great emperors of India have been from the Mauryan period like Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka.

These emperors especially Ashoka was great patron of art and culture in ancient India and several architectural marvels were made during that time, although most of them are ruined a good number of them are still present in museums. The first Mauryan art is the stupas, as most, if they were followers of Buddhism they build several stupas for monks to worship. The other art form includes the pillars, there are several pillars constructed by these kings which had inscriptions on them.

One of these pillars called Ashoka pillar is the national emblem of India. They had mastered the art of constructing canals, although most of them are destroyed after such long times. Several of the rocks statues and terracotta toys are also found during the excavations of different areas that belonged to the Mauryan period.
