- They are called red algae.
- The major pigments present chlorophyll a and c, blue anthocyanin and red phycoerythrin.
- They are mostly found in warm sea and some of them are found in freshwater.
- They are found in multicellular form.
- There are about 5000 name species under rhodophyceae.
- The cell wall is made up of cellulose, pectin and polysulphate esters.
- They store carbohydrate as floridean starch.
- The male gamete is non flagellated.
- There is no presence of flagella.
- The stored food is in the form of floridean starch.
- Some of them have complex body organisation.
- Examples - Gelidium, Gracilaria, Porphyra and Polysiphonia.
