Bastar is a place located in the in the Southernmost part of Chhattisgarh. The people of Bastar launched a revolt against the British government. The main causes for the revolt are the following:

1. The bann on shifting cultivation, hunting and gathering by the government.

2. The introduction of the reserved forest acts.

3.  The attitude of the colonial government, the  increased land rents, and the demand for free labour,

This is how the newly introduced colonial methods affected the lives of the peasants.  As a result, the people of Bastar launched a revolt against the British government. Therefore, to suppress this revolt, the British government sent troops of soldiers to crush the rebellion. Though the tribal leaders made attempt to negotiate the British soldiers besieged their camps and fired on them. The British soldiers marched through villages beating and punishing those who took part in the rebellion.
