Also what inspired them was the wrong system of concentration of power in the hand of one monarch. They believed that people are the real power and proper division of power is essential for efficient running of the government.
1. Works like ‘Two Treatises of Government’ by Locke countered the principles of the Godlike and supremacy of the monarch.
2. Montesquieu recommended sharing of authority between the executive, the legislative and the judiciary in his book ‘The Spirit of the Laws’.
3. Rousseau had foreseen a society with equal laws, freedom for all and suggested the formation of a government based on an agreement between people and their spokespersons.
4. Robespierre fought for the elimination of slavery and was against the death penalty. He also demanded universal suffrage, equal rights and formation of democracy.
5. Voltaire opposed the establishment of Church and encouraged the freedom of expression, freedom of religion and separation of church and state.
