In Sri Lanka Sinhalese make up 74% of the population and are concentrated in the densely populated southwest.

Sri Lankan Tamils, citizens whose South Indian ancestors have lived on the island for centuries, total about 12%, live throughout the country, and predominate in the Northern Province and others are 8 % .

Sri Lanka's diverse population mainly consists of three linguistic groups. Around 74% population of Sri Lanka speak Sinhalese. It forms a majority group of the country. 18% people speak Tamil language and these Tamil speaking people are further subdivided into two groups. First Tamil natives born in Sri Lanka who are known as Sri Lankan Tamils (13%); rest of the Tamils are those whose forefathers migrated from India as plantation workers during the Colonial rule. Around 7% of the people are Christians who speak Sinhalese and Tamil languages. Most of the Tamils are Hindus or muslims and more Sinhalese speakers are Buddhists. Around 8% of these people speak English.
