Most of the cities were divided into two main parts. One section (the upper part) was lined with tall walls like a fortress; the rulers and richer people lived here. The second block (the lower part) had lower walls and the common men lived in this area. 
The two main streets led from south to north of the city and west to east of the city. These two streets met up at right angles or perpendicularly. The width of the streets varied from nine feet to 34 feet and the length of the streets were up to a mile. 
The buildings and houses were built systematically. Different people lived in different types of houses. The rich folk lived in large houses with many rooms while the common people had to live in small tenements or little houses with two rooms.
