The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was passed by the Parliament of India to prevent cruelty against the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. It is popularly known as the SC/ST Act, the Prevention of Atrocities Act or simply the Atrocities Act. Two provisions of this Act are as follows:-
1) This Act may be called the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
2) It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
