Answer:

Addition reaction is the reaction in which an atom or group of atoms are added to a molecule having unsaturation, that is, for example, presence of double bonded carbon atoms, carbon -oxygen, carbon-nitrogen double or triple bonds respectively.

In such cases atom or, group of atoms can be added to that molecule and it can be thus converted to saturated molecule.

Addition reactions are of many types, like hydrogenation( addition of H2 to unsaturated compound via homolysis), hydrolysis (addition of water to unsaturated molecule), hydrohalogenation( addition of hydrohalogen compound to unsaturated molecule) etc.

Addition is not simply called hydrogenation, it may have called so, because in that case it's addition of hydrogen molecule to unsaturated compound, that is taking place.

Hope this may help.
