In algae, fungi, and plants, alternation of generations is common. ... The sexual phase, called the gametophyte generation, produces gametes, or sex cells, and the asexual phase, or sporophyte generation, produces spores asexually.

Alternation of generation can also be termed as metagenesis. Its commonly found in algae and the plants belong to the same species. It is a process by which the plants like algae produces gamete or sexual cells or the asexual phase  in the Archaeplastida and the which have the Heterokontophyta distinct haploid sexual and diploid asexual stages. It is also the stage which is concentrated for the germination of the haploid spores and finally they grow into the haploid-gametophyte.

But it should have to be noted that, during the case of algae the offsprings grow are similar but in case mosses the offspring grows are dissimilar.

And simlply it can be said that alternation of generation is a functionate between the diploid and haploid stages.
