An electric circuit can be defined as a closed path through which electric current can flow. Various components such as battery, resistor, wire, key, bulb etc can be connected in different ways to construct an electric circuit.
In an open circuit the voltage is maximum and no current flows through the circuit, or no load is attached
In a closed circuit the voltage decreases from emf value, current flows in the circuit and load is attached.

electric current is a continous pathway for current to flow
open circuit is that circuit in which the pathway is broken at some point
closed circuit shows a continous path without any break
