It is the process of transportation of water molecules from bottom most part of a plant to the apex of a plant is called ascent of sap . It is done by the transpiration pull and also by the root pressure exerted by xylem

The ascent of sap in plants is explained below:

  • The conducting tissues of plants such as the xylem and phloem transport water, minerals, and food respectively.
  • The transport of water and minerals to all other parts of plants such as leaves and growing buds from the roots is known as the ascent of sap while food transport from leaves to other plant parts is known as transloacation.
  • Their movement is driven by pressure gradient because the root has a higher concentration of water and minerals which is transferred to a lower concentration of xylem vessels. This pressure is known as root pressure.
  • It is a unidirectional process only in an upward direction while food transport is a multi-directional process.
