If the matter is made up of only one kind of element then the smallest unit of that element is called an atom.

Atom may or may not have even independent existence but always take part in a chemical reaction.

1. Fe

2. Cu

3. Pb

4. Zn

If the matter is made up of two or more different elements then the smallest unit of matter is called molecules.

It has an independent existence and can retain complete physical and chemical properties of the matter.

1. FeSO_4

2. CuSO_4

3. H_2O

4. N_2O
