Answer :

The number of unit positive charge carried by the nucleus of an atom is known as atomic number. It is numerically equal to the number of protons present in the nucleus of an atom.

An atom is represented by it's symbol for the element, and atomic number is written on the lower side of the symbol.

\sf{_{A}^{Z}X \: \longleftarrow \: Symbol \: of \: an \: element}

Atomic number is generally represented by '' Z ''

Here,

A = Mass number

Z = Atomic number

X = Symbol of an element

Some Examples :

\begin{gathered}\begin{tabular}{ | c | c | c | } Elements & Atomic \: number & Mass \: Number\\\cline{1-3}  Carbon& 20& 40 \\\cline{1-3} Oxygen & 8& 16 \\\cline{1-3} Chlorine & 17 & 35 \\\cline{1-3} \end{tabular}\end{gathered}
