Biological weathering is the weakening and subsequent disintegration of rock by plants, animals and microbes. Growing plant roots can exert stress or pressure on rock. ... Microbial activity breaks down rock minerals by altering the rock's chemical composition, thus making it more susceptible to weathering.

Biological weathering is the natural phenomenon of weathering of rocks in following ways:

1) Plants: the roots of the plants are the main parts which cause the weathering of rocks, when they put pressure n the rocks while penetrating into them.

2) Animals: small rocks may be converted into soil or smaller particles of rocks by animal or human activities and this is another way through which the rocks can be weathered biologically.

3) Microbes: microbes can release certain chemicals which help in breakdown of rocks and ultimately turning into soil.
